South Korea’s Taihan Cable & Solution has begun construction of its second subsea cable manufacturing facility, which will have a production capacity that will be about five times that of the company’s first facility in South Korea.
The Dongjin 2 subsea cable factory is located in the Gudae area of the Asan National Industrial Complex in Dongjin, Chungcheongnam-do, and is designed to produce 640 kV class HVDC and 400 kV class HVAC subsea cables.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 25, and the factory is expected to officially start operations by 2027.
“Offshore wind power and HVDC subsea cables are strategic industries that are directly related to national industrial competitiveness and energy security,” said Jung Min-sung, vice chairman of the board of directors. “Through Subsea Factory 2, we will contribute to building the country’s energy infrastructure, advancing the renewable energy industry, and laying a foundation for global market leadership.”
Subsea Factory 2 will be built right next to Subsea Factory 1 on a land area of approximately 215,000 square meters and will house a vertical continuous welding (VCV) system with a height of 180 meters, and according to the information and projections obtained, the factory will have a 5-fold increase in production capacity.
Taihan Corporation is one of South Korea’s leading companies in this field, opening the first phase of its first subsea cable factory, which produces inter-array cables, in May 2024, covering an area of approximately 44,800 square meters behind the Godae Pier in Dangjin Port, Pyeongtaek. The second phase, which includes an export cable production facility, was completed and began operations in June 2025.
In addition, the company acquired Korea’s only cable laying vessel (CLV), Palos, in December 2023, and acquired a specialized subsea cable installation company in July this year, with the new company set to open and operate in 2027.
